Vehicle manufacturers affected: BMW, Chrysler, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru and Toyota.

Several people have been killed or injured when the airbags in their cars exploded.  About two weeks ago, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a recall notice for defective airbags in more than 7 million vehicles. This is a major problem. The shrapnel in the airbags can be deadly.

The airbags are made by a Japanese company called Takata and are in place in some Toyota, Ford, Honda, Mazda, BMW, Subaru, Chrysler, Nissan, Mitsubishi, and General Motors models.  Here is a list of the affected vehicles identified to date below.  Because it is possible new makes or models could be added to the list, you can use the look-up tool on the NHTSA website to see if a vehicle has been recalled:  https://vinrcl.safercar.gov/vin/

If you know anyone who owns any of the vehicles listed they can go to the NHTSA web site for instructions on what steps to take with regard to the recall.
